Applied Research (AR) is a section within CSE’s Research Directorate made up of three teams: Data Science, Applied Research and Technology, and the Research Coordination Office.
Its mandate is to understand the difficult problems CSE faces in carrying out its mission today and in the not-too-distant future and to enhance capabilities to address these. It aims to optimize mission impact by building products, such as software, that enable CSE to accomplish its foreign intelligence and cyber defence missions more efficiently.
Applied Research currently has two main focuses:
- improve the effectiveness of analysis and triage
- understand influence and effects campaigns
Data science and applied research and technology
The Data Science team focuses on understanding, evaluating, creating and applying data science models to help CSE achieve its objectives. The team has a strong focus on the mathematics behind data science, the accuracy and the interpretability of models.
The Applied Research and Technology team focuses on computer science. The team provides tailored and integrated solutions to evaluate and life cycle models and systems, and ensures that the Applied Research technology stack is closely aligned with those of production environments. This expertise allows CSE to take advantage of data science advancements as rapidly and safely as possible.
Research coordination office
Applied Research is also home to the Research Coordination Office. This office directs its efforts towards the governance of the research program and the development of research partnerships. It works to gather ideas from the community and facilitates the prioritization of the most impactful ones to work on. Additionally, it identifies the gaps in the directorate’s research strategy that cannot be filled with internal resources, sets up relationships and projects, then finds ways to absorb that material into the mission.
Ways of working
- Collaborative: AR is dedicated to engaging with CSE operations to adjust how they work and improve collaboration.
- Transparent: AR is committed to helping internal partners know and understand what they do and give them the ability to suggest adjustments that can be implemented.
- Innovative: AR has the unique role of taking on higher-risk projects that often require revolutionary rather than evolutionary solutions. Their successes and failures inform their research.
Opportunities
Applied Research hires candidates who fall under the data scientist category. Data science opportunities range from operational to more long-term and research oriented. We encourage data scientists to bring their expertise to a variety of teams and to experience CSE from different perspectives.
